What is the St. Petersburg Science Festival Sneak Peek School Day?

The St. Petersburg Science Festival (SPSF) Sneak Peek School Day is a free event for teachers and students in 4th and 5th grades to celebrate science and experience the wonders of STEAM during a preview of the 9th Annual St. Petersburg Science Festival. Students will begin the two and a half hour field trip with an interactive science presentation by Mad Science. Then students will experience 6 different 15-minute science activities in their groups of 10-15 students.

How do I sign up?

School Day registration is now closed for 2019.

What can you expect in 2019?

We will be repeating the format we used in 2018.

  • You will need to have your students bring their own water this year.
  • Tour Guides will not be taking you from point to point.
  • Exhibit Monitors are located at specific areas to help you.
  • School teachers and chaperones will be responsible for staying on the designated tour paths.
  • Failure to stay on your path during the designated times will likely result in not being invited back next year.
  • You are required to have 2 chaperones per 15 students.
  • You may bring either 4th and 5th IF your total student headcount is less than 100 students. If your total headcount exceeds that please sign up 4th or 5th grade, not both.

Registering DOES NOT MEAN you are guaranteed a slot.  Our goal is to reach out to more schools so we want to make sure all schools get a chance.  However, there are factors beyond our control that limit the number of schools we can invite.

When is the Sneak Peek School Day?

St. Petersburg Science Festival Sneak Peek School Day will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019, from 9 am – 2:30 pm.  Teachers from participating schools select a 2 ½ hour time slot in the second step of the online registration process. You will check off what times you can make.  PLEASE only mark the times you can attend and verify with your schools that you can make those times.  Once we make the initial schedule it is very challenging to alter it afterwards and we may not be able to accommodate those requests. Time slots are:

9:00 am - 11:30 am
10:00 am - 12:30 pm
11:00 am - 1:30 pm
12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

When you are registering please have the following information ready: name and contact information for lead person, if you have busing or not, times you can attend, and if you are bringing lunches or not.

Where is it and how do I get there?

The festival will take place on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus and Poynter Park, along Bayboro Waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg. Student arrival will be on 2nd Street South and 6th Avenue South, across from the University Student Center.

Who is organizing this event?

The St. Petersburg Science Festival is a grassroots community festival led by the St. Pete Ocean Team, a consortium of science organizations in St. Petersburg including USF St. Petersburg, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, NOAA, U.S. Geological Survey, Secrets of the Sea Aquarium, Eckerd College, and the City of St. Petersburg. The planning committee includes faculty and staff from major academic centers, government agencies, leading research organizations, cutting edge high technology corporations, museums, environmental outreach organizations, and students, all of whom are involved in planning, organizing, and executing all the functions that go into putting on a public science event.

Sponsors from throughout the community, many of them collaborators, have provided funding for the science festival.

What science topics will be demonstrated in each exhibit?

Students will experience a diverse array of hands-on, interactive STEAM activities, from physical and environmental science such as Florida water resources, climate and weather, and coastal erosion, to life sciences, with fisheries and coral reefs, to robotics and more! The select group of exhibits available on Friday, October 18, will be tied to Florida science and math standards.

Is there an admission fee?

The science festival is free.  However, teachers and schools must arrange for transportation and bring their own food and drinks. We will have an outside pavilion setup if you want to eat bring and eat lunch at the festival. Water stations will not be available like years past.  Fountains are intermittent on campus, so we recommend your students bring a water bottle.

Is this school day MarineQuest?

No, the Sneak Peek School Day is a separate event from MarineQuest with separate registration and different exhibits and activities.
